Shedding Our Cocoons

The Uncomfortable Beauty of Growth

Preparing to Blossom

We’ve officially made it through the ten darkest weeks of the year. Now, as light stretches further into our days, we ask: What has been lying dormant within us? What parts of ourselves are ready to awaken? What goals can we now pursue with a fresh, renewed energy?

Patterns in Nature

In the same way that we navigate change, nature is constantly transforming. Wolves and dogs shed the heavy coats that once kept them warm, adjusting to embrace the lighter, freer months ahead. Snakes shed their entire skin so they can move with ease, making room for new growth. Trees, which stood bare and patient all winter, now stretch toward the sun, safe to bloom again.

Even the smallest signs in nature reflect this universal rhythm. Dormant bushes begin to bud with life. Wildflowers bloom unexpectedly in patches of grass. Somewhere, a bear is waking from its long hibernation, a sleep filled with dreams, ready to re-enter the world.

Spring is the season where all that was gathering within us, all the quiet energy, finally has the space to surface. It’s a time to shake off stagnation and literally spring forward into our becoming.

Aligning with the seasons only makes sense. Nature has always provided a rhythm for us to follow, yet, in modern life, we’ve become disconnected from it. An episode of the podcast Wild recently explored this idea, with a conservationist noting how humans once lived in tune with nature’s subtle cues: the migration of birds, the timing of certain blooms, the changing direction of the wind. These signs were once our guide, a way of moving in harmony with the world rather than resisting its changes.

The Uncomfortable Beauty of Change

Change is inevitable. It happens to everything, everyone, everywhere. And yet, it is often uncomfortable.

Leaving a place of comfort. Starting a new job. Reaching out first. Taking a solo hike. Moving away from home. Stepping on stage for the first time. Sharing your work with the world. Each of these things can feel unsettling, like shedding a skin we’ve outgrown. But as nature teaches us, this discomfort is temporary, a necessary part of transformation.

With time, we see that everything unfolds just as it’s meant to. If something brings joy, we can be grateful and soak it in. If something challenges us, we can sit with it and ask: What is this moment teaching me?

So let’s step out of our own way. Let’s lean into the unknown. Let’s see what finds us there.
